Can CBD Really Help My Skin?

If you have been following trends in the CBD (cannabidiol) industry, you may have noticed that the once-taboo cannabinoid is quickly becoming more accepted and, arguably, more mainstream. All of this is for good reason as it has proven many times over to be an effective treatment for a host of mental and physical health problems. For those who are not familiar with CBD, it is a cannabinoid native to the Cannabis Sativa plant. It is worth noting that this is the same plant that contains THC, the cannabinoid responsible for the euphoric high commonly associated with marijuana. However, unlike THC, CBD can help resolve numerous health problems, including problem skin, without triggering the same euphoric high.

HOW CBD CAN HELP IMPROVE THE HEALTH AND APPEARANCE OF YOUR SKIN

Multiple studies have shown that CBD positively interacts with the body’s two CBD receptors, CB1 and CB2. When CBD oils and other topical CBD-based products are applied to the skin, they interact with these receptors to help reduce inflammation, which, coincidentally, is linked to many skin problems. According to Robert Dellavalle, MD, Ph.D., a professor of epidemiology at the Colorado School of Public Health based in Aurora, this is a byproduct of the antioxidant and other properties in CBD causing a decline in interleukins, a group of naturally occurring proteins that facilitate communication between cells. These interleukins play a critical role when it comes to triggering an array of immune systems responses, including inflammation.

WHAT TYPE OF SKIN PROBLEMS CAN BE RESOLVED USING CBD-BASED PRODUCTS?

Although CBD-based products can’t resolve all skin problems, there is evidence showing that they can help with some of the more common issues that many people face, including

ACNE

For those with acne-prone skin, CBD oil can quickly put you on the path to clear, blemish-free skin, according to several studies. Along with helping to reduce inflammation, the all-natural cannabinoid has been shown to slow the production of sebum. For those who are unfamiliar with sebum, it is a naturally-occurring substance that helps keep the skin moisturized. However, when produced in abundance, sebum can lead to acne and oily skin.

HOW TO USE CBD OIL TO RESOLVE ACNE

To get the best results from using CBD oil to resolve acne, you should combine it with a carrier oil, such as coconut, olive, or argan oil. From there, you will want to apply the mixture directly to your acne once or twice per day until your skin has cleared up. On a side note, studies have shown that oral CBD-based products, such as gummies and tincture, can also help resolve acne, especially when combined with a healthy skin care regimen.

PREMATURE AGING

Few things can make you look older than your chronological age than the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles; fortunately, these are skin problems that can be resolved via CBD-based products as well. In short, the antioxidant properties in CBD can stimulate an uptick in the production of collagen, which, in turn, improves the skin’s elasticity and minimizes the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Also, these same antioxidant properties can fight off free radicals, which can cause the skin to appear dull.

HOW TO USE CBD TO RESOLVE PREMATURE AGING

To reverse the fine lines and wrinkles synonymous with premature aging, you could use either oral or topical CBD-based products:

Topical CBD – For best results, you will want to apply oils or lotions that contain a high percentage of CBD to your fine lines and wrinkles. It would also be a good idea to wash your face before applying them as this will allow the cannabinoid to absorb into the skin’s pores more efficiently. And to keep your skin looking its best, you will want to make these treatments part of an ongoing skincare routine. It is also worth noting that soaps and balms that contain CBD are also effective when it comes to combating signs of premature aging.

Oral CBD – For younger, radiant skin, you can use CBD tinctures, which are placed under the tongue and is eventually absorbed into your bloodstream. If you’re using CBD tinctures for the first time, it is a good idea to start with a low dose to see how you respond to it and then work your way up to higher doses if needed. It is worth noting that other oral CBD products, such as gummies, for example, can also provide the same benefits.

ECZEMA

Eczema is yet another skin problem that can be remediated via CBD-based products. Also known as dermatitis, eczema is a collective of diseases that are caused by an overactive immune system. Individuals with eczema will often experience itchiness and red skin. They may also develop a rash. CBD products help to tamp down these immune responses and eventually improve the skin’s health and appearance. For best results, you will want to follow the same directions for using CBD-based products to resolve premature aging.

BOTTOM LINE

It should be made clear that the skin problems detailed in this article only represent a fraction of the ones that can be resolved with CBD oils, tinctures, creams, lotions, and other CBD-based products.
