Roughly 764,000 people in the United States (both children and adults) have at least one symptom of cerebral palsy, as per the American Family Physician journal. Cerebral palsy is a group of disorders that make it challenging for individuals to move and maintain balance and posture, affecting various physical functions in the body. While there’s a variety of treatments, medicines, and specialists successfully used to treat cerebral palsy, herbal remedies can also be used in support to manage common symptoms.

Ginger root

Therapy for cerebral palsy comes in many forms to address the common emotional, physical, and intellectual challenges associated with the condition. Physical, occupational, and speech therapy and psychotherapy are cornerstone treatments tailored to suit the unique needs of each individual. In addition, herbal therapy can help ease pain and support overall health and wellbeing.

In particular, root ginger is an anti-inflammatory and healing herb scientifically found to reduce pain and stiffness in the joints by up to 40%, which can be a transformative improvement for people with cerebral palsy who often experience spasticity and pain. Root ginger also improves immunity and blood circulation and promotes healthy oxygen levels in the brain while combating oxidative stress; this in turn significantly improves neural communication and cognitive function. Root ginger can be either used in cooking, taken in capsule form, or as a tea.

Echinacea

Echinacea is a Native American medicinal plant that’s been used as an effective general cure-all for centuries. For people with cerebral palsy, echinacea supplements have a variety of health and wellbeing benefits. In particular, a number of laboratory and animal studies indicate it contains active compounds that stimulate blood circulation throughout the body, relieve pain, and reduce inflammation. Echinacea also helps improve neural communication. As a result, this incredible herb works well at relaxing and soothing stiff, painful, and spastic muscles. Echinacea also has antiviral and antioxidant properties, which boost the immune system — this can be extremely helpful for people with cerebral palsy who may have weakened immune systems and be more susceptible to infections.

Astragalus root

Astragalus root has been a staple component of Traditional Chinese Medicine for thousands of years. In particular, this wonderful herb is packed with antioxidants and polysaccharides, which support the immune system and heart health, as well as the integrity of the respiratory tract. Astragalus root has also been found to cure sleep issues like insomnia, sleeplessness, and interrupted sleep, which can be common symptoms of cerebral palsy. It does this essentially by promoting a healthy functioning metabolism and hormonal balance. Astragalus root also works to strengthen and regulate the immune system and fight against harmful viruses and bacteria, which people with cerebral palsy may be particularly vulnerable to catching.

Herbal remedies can be a useful natural tool to manage and prevent symptoms of cerebral palsy. Consult your doctor or healthcare specialist to find out which herbal therapy best suits your unique treatment needs.
